Does Flagstaff Even Need Its Own SEO Guide?

Fair question. In many ways, SEO, or “search engine optimization,” is the same regardless of where you are located. It’s simply the process of trying to get your site to rank on Google, AI and other search engines. But in a few ways, location matters. A couple of the biggest ways that SEO is specific to Flagstaff include:

  • Use of geographic keywords (cities, local landmarks, counties, region (northern AZ), and neighborhood names (Kachina Village, Cheshire, etc.). Not just that you use them, which is important, but how you use them and which geographic words you use also matter.
  • Local content on your site should emphasize Flagstaff and the surrounding area in specific ways. For example, mention other Flagstaff businesses, a nonprofit that services Flagstaff, Flagstaff landmarks, Flagstaff web properties, etc.
  • Off-page SEO signals. You need to be in the right directories and mentioned on the right local websites in order to achieve optimal ranking. Also, consider reaching out to the local media. These signals and approaches are specific to Flagstaff and require a certain approach to achieve optimum results.

I’m going to add particular emphasis to the areas where location really does matter but I will also cover topics where it doesn’t matter as much in order to make this a comprehensive resource.

Keyword Research for Flagstaff SEO

What do you want to rank for? First, develop a strategy for what you want to rank for, then do research to determine how consumers use keywords to find your product or service online.

Find the Right Keywords to Target with SEO efforts

  • Ask AI. Ask an AI Chat Bot such as Gemini to search Reddit and User-generated content to determine what keywords and phrases people use when discussing the service you provide (in particular, hiring a contractor who does what you do).
  • Use Keyword Tools: You can use Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends to find out what things people are searching for. Really any keyword research tool online should work (go with a free one).
  • Ask the Receptionist. Whoever answers the phones should know what terms people use when asking for the service. These tend to be the same terms they type into search engines.
  • What is Your Most Profitable Service. Focus on keywords that help you sell the things you want to sell most–the things you make the most money on.
  • Consider Targeting Lower-Competition Keywords. The highest volume keywords are not always the best. Sometimes they’re too competitive to rank for and you may be better off going after lower competition keywords that are overlooked by your competitors. For example, there are a lot of “Flagstaff Electricians” but not many “Kachina Village Electricians.” Although the second query may not get a lot of traffic, you can do neighborhood pages for all neighborhoods in town and potentially get volume of traffic in aggregate. Niching down is good SEO in many cases.
  • Drill Down (and Up). If you are targeting Flagstaff, then your keywords are not just Flagstaff, Flagstaff, Flagstaff. You should also target neighborhood-level keywords (Kachina Village, Doney Park, etc.) and higher-level keywords (AZ, Arizona, Northern Arizona, Coconino County, etc.).
  • Contextual Keywords. You also need to mention local landmarks (NAU Walkup Sky Dome, San Francisco Peaks, etc.) and neighboring towns (Sedona, Williams, etc.) to achieve optimal rankings.

Optimize Your Google Business Profile

For most local service businesses, your Google Business Profile (GPB) is the most important component of your SEO strategy. Because your GBP shows up in both Google searches and Google Maps searches, and because the information is now used in Google’s own proprietary AI search recommendations, you want to do everything you can to SEO your GBP. I cannot overemphasize how important GBPs are for Flagstaff area businesses.

  • Keywords in Business Name. Although you’re not supposed to stuff keywords in your business name, companies with local keywords (such as “Flagstaff”) and the service they provide in their business name tend to rank higher.
  • Brick and Mortar. Companies with an actual physical location where they see customers tend to rank higher than home-based businesses or other businesses that hide their address.
  • City-centric Location. You will tend to rank higher for searches such as “Flagstaff electrician” if you are located within Flagstaff city limits, and closer to the center of the city is better (The Rodeway Inn at Humphreys and Route 66 is the city’s centroid, according to Google).
  • Reviews. You need to implement a strategy to get as many 5-star reviews as possible. You need to consistenly acquire them over time, and they need to be real reviews from actual Flagstaff customers. This helps with SEO and also conversion because it makes your listing more appealing to click on.
  • Categories. Make sure you select the most relevant primary business category (do a search on Google Maps for what you want to show up for; make note of what categories the ranking companies are using). Also select all relevant secondary categories.
  • Photos and Videos. Regularly post appealing photos and videos that make people want to stop scrolling and choose your company.
  • Posts. Regularly add posts with up-to-date sales and catchy imagery. Highlight something about Flagstaff as well so people see that you are local.
  • Directions. Send your Google Maps link to your Flagstaff location to as many customers as possible so they use Google Maps to navigate to your store. You can include it in an appointment reminder. That way, Google sees that a lot of people are interested in getting to your store and ranks you higher.
  • Thorough Profile. Fill your profile out as completely as possible, including listing any services or products you carry.
  • Appealing Description. Use your business description to sell your service. Why should they choose you? Make them stop and click more and call you. Make it very clear what your connection is to the Flagstaff area (founded in Flagstaff? Owned and operated by Flagstaff natives? etc.)
  • Make sure your website is mobile-friendly (it has to load fast on mobile as well to rank).

SEO on Your Website

Once your GBP is thoroughly optimized, it’s time to SEO audit your website. Although your website’s visibility on Google will be lower than it might have been in the old days, it now shows up in a lot more places in AI search results (Gemini, Chat GPT, Google AI, etc.). Here are the steps that I recommend to get your site showing up everywhere that people are searching:

  • Create and Optimize Sales Pages: Determine what keywords you want to rank for and select a page to rank for each keyword phrase. For example, a Flagstaff dentist might have the following pages:
    1. Homepage (ranks for “Flagstaff dentist”)
    2. Service pages (“teeth whitening” page ranks for “teeth whitening dentist flagstaff”)
On the other hand, a local electrician who is willing to travel may have “city + service pages.” For example, one site can have “Flagstaff Electrician,” “Sedona Electrician,” and several other city + electrician pages. A brick and mortar business with locations in both Flagstaff and Sedona would have locations pages for both Flagstaff and Sedona. So it really depends on the type of business but the gist is that you want to have a page for every keyword phrase you want to rank for. You can use a tool like Page Optimizer Pro to keyword-optimize each sales page individually.
  • Photos and Videos. You’ll rank higher if you have a lot of unique and fresh photo and video content. Stock photos can be useful but unique photos are going to rank better and convert better as well if they’re well done.
  • Local Signals. Get your local 928 phone # and your Flagstaff business address onto every page (assuming you’re only targeting this area; if targeting multiple areas you will need to use sales pages to get all your local information in to rank).
  • Informational Content. Google and AI search tools love informational content. The more informational content you can provide that is relevant to your core keywords, the better you will rank. Create guides, blog posts, etc. and be sure to link to your sales pages (and to other informational content pieces) liberally in each content piece. When you link from a blog post back to your main page, don’t use ‘click here.’ Highlight the actual words that describe your business, like [Flagstaff electrician], and attach the link to those words. If you are targeting Flagstaff, make sure to frequently include Flagstaff-revelant content as well. Maybe you can write a blog post about an electrical job you did at NAU Sky Dome for example. And high on that page, link back to your main “Flagstaff Electrician” page to drive the Google juice back to your sales page.

Web Directories & Outreach

Google and other search engines rely on a lot of off-page signals to determine how to rank your website. If you are listed in local directories like the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce or the Downtown Flagstaff Business Alliance you will rank higher. If you are mentioned in an article in the Arizona Daily Sun you can also expect a boost for that. Think of a link from another website to yours as a digital vote of confidence. A vote from an established local site like the Flagstaff Chamber or the Daily Sun carries a lot of weight with Google, while a link from a brand-new or irrelevant site doesn’t do much. The key is to get mentioned and linked to from sites that focus on either your geographic area (“Flagstaff,” “Arizona,” etc.) or your service keywords (“electrician,” “neurologist,” etc.). You need both to be successful in ranking.

  • Directories. First get your business listed in as many online local directories as possible. There are general ones like Apple Maps and more niche ones for specific business categories (e.g. physical therapy directories). You can do this manually but you can also use Moz, White Spark, Yext or Bright Local to automate it. I suggest automating it. Moz Local is usually the cheapest service. The only service I am aware of that is good at getting the industry links as well is WhiteSpark. So if you don’t want to do that yourself consider their service. When your name, address, phone number and website shows up consistently all across the web your visibility will improve.
  • Link Exchanges. You have to be careful about this because Google doesn’t like it and they can flag it but you can do an A-B-C link exchange (simple reciprocal link exchanges don’t pass much Google juice), where you link to from Site A (your site) to Site B, and Site C (owned by Site B owner) links to your site (Site A). These links can pass link juice if done right.
  • Flagstaff-specific Directories. It’s going to really help you to rank locally if you are listed in the directories of local organizations. For example:
    1. New media business directories
    2. Business networking groups (Flagstaff Chamber, Local First, Flagstaff Professionals, BNI Flagstaff Elevation, etc.)
    3. Office space directories (Click Co-Working, Regus, etc.)
    4. Neighborhood sites (Downtown Business Alliance).
Basically any organization you’re involved with could have a directory.
  • Sponsor Flagstaff Causes: If you sponsor Little League or a non-profit, you may get a link to your site on their website. Such links are very valuable. For example, Flagstaff Big Brothers and Big Sisters links to all their sponsors. Check out our complete list of Flagstaff sponsorship/backlink opportunities.
  • Be a Presenter. If you present at Flagstaff Rotary Club, CCC SCORE, etc. they will often link to your website.
  • Media Outreach. If you have a story, find the most relevant reporter or editor at the Daily Sun and shoot them an email. Response rates tend to be low for media submissions so try a few other local, or Arizona-based outlets as well.

Track Your Flagstaff Search Improvements

Once you’ve put in the work, don’t sit at your desk searching your own business on Google every morning. Search engines customize results based on your personal browsing history, so what you see on your own phone isn’t what your customers see. Instead of paying for expensive tracking software, use the free tools you already have. Check your Google Business Profile Performance tab once a month. Don’t get bogged down by “impressions” or “clicks.” Focus entirely on the actions that put money in your pocket:

  • Phone Calls: Are more people hitting the “Call” button directly from your listing?
  • Direction Requests: Are people actively routing themselves to your shop?
  • Website Clicks: Is your site traffic growing month-over-month?
  • Google Search Console is a free, very easty-to-use tool that lets you know exactly what’s going on with your organic Google traffic. Specifically filter for “Flagstaff” keywords.
  • Also Just Ask. Are more people finding you online? On Google?
